| Wheeler Lake is noted as one of the few lakes that successfully harbor largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. The lake's steep banks and current make it a phenomenal fishery for both smallmouth and spotted bass. Wheeler also has many shallower areas and tributaries that foster the lake's largemouth fishery. Several major bass tournaments venues are held at Wheeler Lake each year. Other species of warm-water fish in Wheeler include crappie, striped bass, catfish, sauger, and southern chain pickerel. Baitfish at Wheeler Lake consist of both threadfin and gizzard shad, as well as a variety of minnows. Milfoil grows in abundance and, by offering thick cover it ensures a good survival rate for young fish. |
