Wheeler Lake History
Completion of Wheeler Dam
Wheeler Dam, one of nine mainstream Tennessee Valley Authority dams, created the largest Tennessee River lake in north Alabama. The dam was named after Joe Wheeler, who in 1898 introduced the first in a long series of bills for the development of Muscle Shoals that eventually led to the creation of TVA in 1933. The construction of Wheeler Dam took 3 years and was completed in 1936. The shoreline of Wheeler is home to Joe Wheeler State Park, two state wildlife management areas, two group camps, and 12 boat docks.
